Thursday, July 24, 2008 Poetry in Motion.... Just thought I'd share one of my two remaining poems =p This poem goes by two titles, Friends In the Winter & Frozen Fire. (lol, take your pick.) This is the second out of some 20+ compositions, composed in 2000 when I was primary 6 =p Friends in the winter, Freeze the fire Cold, bitter, gone forever! Basically, the poem describes the break up between two friends. The interpretations range from a breakup after a bitter argument to parting via death/old age. Thinking back, I wonder what went through my head when I composed this. Only thing I recall is entering a sub-conscious state and the words just spilled out. When I composed it, I did not understand the meaning it held until several weeks later =p Putting that aside, the features I like best about this poem is the oxymoron and symbolic use of climate. Winter describes the end of something. "Freeze the fire" on the other hand, describes the warm fires of friendship being put to a halt. This is a oxymoron as fires cant be frozen. In physics, it is a mass of energy in the form of heat and light. Alternatively, you can interpret it as a cold fire =) "Cold, bitter, gone forever!", describe the emotions of the friends after parting. Ironically, these are the things they both share in common despite their hate for one another. It expresses the thoughts they share such as never wanting to see the other party. |
